Started my awesome day with Disney+ and let me tell you, what a sap I am in case you believe me otherwise, if anything else at all.
This is how my day unfolded today:
Alien: Earth – Ep: 4 at 10:00 EST – Brutal but effective storytelling. However, the most incredible aspect of episode 4 is their focus on the metaphorical parenting employed by the prominent episode leads. Those of us who’ve ever questioned our parenting skills are hence-force entwined, and that is the true horror in this episode. Oh so effective horror of a nature that reaches into the soul of us who’ve ever considered this question of our own ability to take under our wing the younger and more fragile of us.
I especially respect the story between Timothy Olyphant‘s father figure character (who turns in an absolutely brilliant performance) taking under his wing his child/android transfer student to teach him to be a scientist.
This whole story unfolds in contrast to the story of Kumi Morrow (played by admirably despicable Babou Ceesay, who is the antithesis of Olyphant’s father figure character), who undertakes the task of transforming Ardash Gourav (whose performance as much so shines) into an agent of the Yutani company (the precursor that will eventually become the ever famous Weyland-Yutani, or “the Wey-yu” as its often called in the slang of the Alien universe).
In contrast to all of this, Essie Davis (as Dame Sylvia) and David Rysdahl represent the “traditional” dualistic idea of parenting, as the only real parents of the episode, accenting what Hawley has chosen to explore in this episode’s aspect of real horror. Their performance is perhaps the most effective of all, because it visits so closely what most people regard as the idealistic vision of parenting.
There is no Saturday reprieve for the wicked, however I did after that watch Shogun: Ep 4 and was hencely rewarded with a much more optimistic and satisfying vision of the feudal and dynastic era of Japan thanks to Hiroyuki Sanada’s exploration of James Clavell’s novels of this era in Japan’s history.
What Saturday would be complete without seeing how Stan Lee/Jack Kirby’s Marvel Character Adam Warlock in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and quite honestly I’ll probably be living Saturday for the rest of my life. What an awesome movie.
Oh, as far as parenting goes, I’m the wonderful single parent of a male cat. One who frequently stages dives into the mosh pit of my stomach while I’m fast asleep, quite frequently, as an attempt to get my attention.
